Why Biodiversity?
Biodiversity and ecosystem services provide invaluable – but often invisible – benefits at global, regional and local scales. These include services such as nutrient cycling, habitat provisioning, pollination, erosion control and climate regulation. Biodiversity underpins all life and provides vital benefits to our societies and economies.
According to the UN around 1 million animal and plant species are now threatened with extinction, many within decades, more than ever before in human history.
WE HAVE TO REVERSE THESE TRENDS

According to the UN around 1 million animal and plant species are now threatened with extinction, many within decades, more than ever before in human history.
WE HAVE TO REVERSE THESE TRENDS
A small passionate group came to pick up the cause of mainstreaming the importance of biodiversity. TEALEAVES has dedicated thousands of hours to create an ecosystem of biodiversity experts through articles, documentary films, and novel collaborations hosted on Nature X Design.
In 2023, in collaboration with Pantone Color Institute, they launched the Color of Biodiversity
The color created an energy: a combination of optimism and urgency that propelled dozens of premier designers, artists, and educators to take up the cause: posting, creating and talking about biodiversity. A premier group came together to donate their time into the creation of Biodiversity⁺ Design.
Introducing Biodiversity⁺ Design
Biodiversity⁺ Design can help you access the thinking methods of leading designers, how they unlock mental pathways that lead them to adaptable, resilient, and world changing ideas.
Biodiversity⁺ Design focuses on the creation of pathways of thought.
The following principles can activate a mindset shift towards designing like nature and for nature.

In-Symbiosis
Aim for mutually beneficial relationships between people and nature, because humans are nature.
We must be guided by humility, and acknowledge the interplay between our roles as designers and ecosystems. If we create something that benefits nature, it benefits us as well - and vice versa. The only true flourishing is collective flourishing.
Expand
Biodiversity shows us that partnerships are strongest when symbiotic, meaning both parties benefit, like the fruit bat and the fig tree. Humans are a part of biodiversity, impact it and benefit from it: Connecting to nature makes us healthier because we are nature. Thus we should design in-symbiosis.
In-Symbiosis recognizes the profound impact of our design(ing) on ecosystems. Guided by humility, we acknowledge the intricate interplay between our roles as designers and the diverse systems that surround us, in an attempt to foster sustainable pathways of designing. We honor the intricate web of life and biodiversity by understanding the complex interconnections of our actions. Collaborating with ecosystems and nurturing their resilience and adaptability is rooted in our humble recognition of our place in the larger whole.

In-Process
Recognize that a design(ing) is never finished.
What seems like a ‘solution’ now may not be one in five, ten or one hundred years from now. Our designs must be able to continually adapt if they are going to be useful to our changing world.
Expand
The biodiversity of our world exists because evolution is always in process, species evolve while others are lost to natural selection. We can see natural selection occurring alongside us in the modern world, adapting to human impact on the planet. Thus, biodiversity teaches us that we should design in-process.
In-Process is an approach that prioritizes adaptability and flexibility, taking into account the complexity and evolution of systems. It also requires us to be mindful of our proximity to systems of oppression, in order to hold ourselves accountable for the consequences of our (un)intended actions.

In-Collaboration
Diverse perspectives make ideas stronger.
Champion the power of collaboration. If we involve diverse perspectives in our design(ing) it will result in more resilient work. Uniting diverse perspectives and stakeholders is essential to truly addressing complex challenges.
Expand
Biodiversity makes up the living parts of ecosystems, which are systems that function because they are made up of diversity - and the more diverse an ecosystem is, the more resilient it is. Inversely, loss of diversity puts ecosystems at risk. Biodiversity teaches us that diversity creates strength, so we should design in-collaboration.
In-Collaboration champions the power of collective and collaborative endeavors, we must nurture an inclusive and collaborative practice that honors the profound wisdom found within communities that have lived in harmonious ways with nature. By creating opportunities for collaboration and knowledge-sharing, we can inspire and mobilize each other to take action in support of biodiversity. In-collaboration, we can achieve collective impact and work towards building biodiversity positive futures.
Enhance your design process with the following thoughtful considerations

Biodiverse Pathways
Give Attention to Our Systems
Delve into the intricate web of social, cultural, and environmental ecosystems, acknowledging their interconnectedness and influence on the design. Consider the impact and implications of each decision on the larger whole.
Assess and Co-define Needs
Begin by understanding the specific requirements and challenges of the project in collaboration with stakeholders, identifying opportunities to integrate biodiversity into the design process.
Collaboratively Set Pathways for Action
Engage in inclusive and sustainable collaboration, bringing together diverse perspectives and expertise to develop informed strategies for promoting biodiversity in the design.
Co-create Alternative Futures
Embrace adaptability and flexibility by envisioning evolving pathways rather than rigid solutions. Design with deep-time awareness, considering the lasting impact of choices on future generations and the Earth's ecosystems.
Take Action, Together
Empower stakeholders to collectively implement the biodiversity-focused design, taking meaningful steps towards sustainable development and the flourishing of all life on Earth. Emphasize ongoing collaboration and knowledge-sharing to inspire broader positive impacts beyond the immediate project scope.
